The portraits painted by Vangobot Jr were based on facebook profile pictures taken from a list ofconfirmed attendees. The largest portrait was painted at the lastminute by Vangobot 2 its first painting.

Vangobot’s show statement draft.

Vangobot is a collabrative effort by artists Luke Kelly and Doug Marx. Our idea was to put the decisionmaking process in the hands of the individual to be able to createthe art that they desired through the use of a simple user interfaceand access to millions of images or with images they choose to uploadthemselves. Unhappy with the current lack of an artistic quality from printers and photo imagers available today the Vangobot painting machines were concieved.

The paintings which are presented here were completly painted by machine.
An image is sent to the machine and the machine does the rest. Currently there are two machines in use. Vangobot a simple cnc 3 axis device and Vangobot II when upon completion will be a true robot with 6 degrees of freedom the ability to mix its own paint and change brushes at will.

The paintings shown here are all images obtained from Facebook.com user profile thumbnails. The decison on which photos to use came from the RSVP list of confirmed attendess to this event.

The last of the stragglers cleared out a little after 11pm. I heard from several people that we were the talk of the building. They said, where ever they went in the building they heard people talking about the robot paintings.

I was exhausted by the end of the night had not talked to that many people in years I figured by the end of the night we had over 400 people through there.

After the show Kate and I cleaned upall our crud and walked down to our car and our car was gone!!! Got towed that explains the super excellent parking spot we thought we had -clearly marked as a tow zone whoops.
